The Origins and Development of Bedford Park

Toronto’s Bedford Park neighbourhood goes back to the late 1800’s. Bedford Park was a very popular area for farmers to stop on there way to the Toronto markets. The neighbourhood was named after the Bedford Park Hotel which opened in 1873.

It wasn’t until 1890 that Bedford Park began residential development. Thanks to the Metropolitan Street Railway many people could easily get to and out of the area if desired. Soon after the railway was built, the Bedford Park area was annexed to the Town of North Toronto. In 1912, the Town of North Toronto (including Bedford Park) was officially annexed to the City of Toronto.

Today, Toronto’s Bedford Park neighbourhood attracts families with children, and this is mainly because of it’s excellent variety of education opportunities for children and teenagers. However, education isn’t the only thing that attracts people to Bedford Park, there’s also many parks, green spaces, playgrounds, a community centre, a library, convenient access to Toronto’s main public transportation systems, and best of all, Bedford Park has great Toronto real estate available.

Houses in Bedford Park come in a wide variety of detached and semi-detached real estate. These homes were mainly built between 1890 and 1940, but lately a few of the bungalows have been torn down and replaced by custom designed townhouses. The homes in Bedford Park are low-rise terraced real estate, in a private ravine setting.

The Bedford Park neighbourhood not only has great Toronto real estate available, but it also offers it’s residence a conveniently close shopping district, many recreational activities to keep you active, great education opportunities for children and teenagers, and reliable public transportation to anywhere in Toronto!

Shopping for Bedford Park residence is easy. The Yonge Lawrence Village shopping district is a close family oriented area, with a nice selection of stores to choose from. The Yonge Lawrence Village shopping district features: general stores, antique shops, gift shops, clothing stores, coffee shops, bakeries, and restaurants.

Recreational activities are all around Bedford Park. There’s a few parks, but Wanless Park is the largest and most popular park in the neighbourhood. Wanless Park features: five floodlit tennis courts, a basketball court, a baseball diamond, a totlers playground, and a wading pool. The local library offers year round programs and activities for preschoolers, children, and adults. Another great local place to check out is the the Fairlawn Neighbourhood Centre (FNC). The FNC is a very unique building offering a huge range of programs targeted to all ages. The FNC has over 2500 active members, and has become the one of Toronto’s largest community centres.

Education is important, and with seven schools in the area, it’s just a matter of preference to which school your children go to. There’s a variety of schools including: three public elementary schools, one public secondary schools, one catholic school, and two private schools.

Transportation is convenient and easy. The subway station is within walking distance from any house located in Bedford Park. There’s also a public bus service, which routes directly through the neighbourhood! From Bedford Park, it takes approximately 20 minutes to get to downtown Toronto, and only five minutes to the 401 highway.
