Dinner At The Mayor’s House

There has been lots of debate about our new Mayor Rob Ford and who is really in charge. During the election I was campaigned quite regularly by my ultra conservative law and order son not to vote for our apparently beer swilling wife beating mayor. He regailed me of the horrors of Rob Ford fearing that I would like many other Torontonians vote for change.

Since he works for the City of Toronto I suspected an ulterior motive and a personal agenda of course. However, truthfully other than his campaign slogans I knew nothing more about Rob Ford other than that he was a Councillor in Etobicoke who kept on successfully winning his seat. I of course have been assured many times that this was done by carrying two fours of beer in his car to share with anyone he wanted to get onside with him. Are people really this gullible?

Anyway about two weeks ago I got my personal invite to attend dinner and a bash at the Mayor’s house. I RSVP’d and set the date on my calendar. I personally have no real opinion of the Mayor and I determined this would be an investigative journey. The only thing I actually care about is that our fare city remains as great as it is and keeps on improving. Frankly I don’t really care who accomplishes this goal. But being a very curious sort I wanted to check things out first hand.

The Economist’s World’s Most Liveable Cities 2011 (Top 10)[8]

City Country Rating
1 Melbourne Australia 97.5
2 Vienna Austria 97.4
3 Vancouver Canada 97.3
4 Toronto Canada 97.2
5 Calgary Canada 96.6
6 Sydney Australia 96.1
7 Helsinki Finland 96.0
8 Perth Australia 95.9
9 Adelaide Australia 95.9
10 Auckland New Zealand 95.7

The city of Melbourne in Australia was ranked as the world’s most livable city in 2011. As you can see above Toronto is considered by the Economist in their 2011 survey as the 4th most liveable city in the world. So Yes we want it to stay right up there.
Because I was working on a transaction I was really late on my arrival. It started at 6:30 p.m. and I didn’t arrive until almost 9 p.m. Shame, Rob has quite a spread. Would have loved to get some pictures. If I get invited back I will make sure to turn up early. Well turns out Rob knows how to give one hell of a bash. Curious though, like the Great Gatsby ( do you remember that film) he doesn’t seem to attend his own parties. Never saw hide nor hair of our Mayor. Although I did read online the next morning that he gave an opening speach about his City of Toronto accomplishments so far.

A huge spread. Large oversized home on about one acre of land. Rob’s pool house was larger than some of the small bungalows in our city and had a full kitchen. Wonder how he got the permit for that? Pool, ampitheatre with stage for bands to play, dance floor and a few hundred thousands dollars worth of stonework, rockery and gardens. He must have dropped about half a mill in his yard.

Hope he gives his neighbours lots of notice of these bashes. You could hear it all the way down the road. Many many concrete statues and a concrete fountain as large as or larger than you will find at some public buildings. Definitely a party house with a party garden. I see how this man has built his following and reputation.
The crowd was average folk to a fairly redneck sort of group as you got closer to the patios at the rear door of the house the men got definitely larger in size…. Sort of the XXXXXwasitlines. Seems like does attract like. Oops that’s not polite. I am not supposed to say things like that, not politically correct.

The slimmer crowds were down on the dance floor. Lots of burgs and dogs beers and wine. I ate before I came. I am allergic to those wheat buns. Had a glass of wine. A couple hundred people in a city back garden with constant inflow and outflow.

I did notice that although there were a number of police officers and security people milling about at the party there were no police stopping party goers as they drove away some with a fair amount of booze on their breath… I could smell it coming in.Wonder how he organized that one? Interesting.

One thing for sure, you won’t find another political bash like this anywhere else around Toronto.
