Does your home smell good? Sometimes it’s hard for us to tell, so have a friend come over and bring their sniffer. Is there a stray potato turning into a science project in your pantry? Do you have pets? What is that smell wafting from your sink drain?
I want my home to smell clean and inviting. I love things that smell good.
Here are 10 tips for making your home smell great! We will ASSUME that it is clean – that is, of course, the MOST important factor!
- Poke some dryer sheets in between your towels and linens in your linen closet. The scent lasts a long time, and your linens will smell so fresh and clean when you use them.
- Cooking and baking will make your house smell very ‘homey’ and inviting. Don’t worry, even if it’s just frozen bread dough, or a cookie dough roll, it’s still going to smell yummy.
- Open the windows! Let the fresh air in and let it circulate throughout the house.
- Use natural aromatics as decorations, such as home grown herbs, eucalyptus leaves, pine needles, cedar chunks, and flowers.
- Soak a few cotton balls in an aromatic oil and toss them in your vacuum cleaner bag before vacuuming. The exhaust from the vacuum will smell great.
- Put a drop of vanilla on your light bulbs. (Do it before you turn them on so the bulb doesn’t shatter)
- Absorb odors by putting open boxes of baking soda in those damp spots like under the bathroom sink and in the backs of closets.
- Get some Febreeze. That stuff is like a miracle. Spray the drapes inside and out. They will warm from the sun coming through the window and the scent of the Febreeze will gently scent the air. Spray anything and everything that is porous, including the dog’s pillow!
- Drops of Essential oil on something terra cotta and then set someplace where it can warm is a great way to get scent into the air too.
- Candles and Reed Diffusers are great too. Some scented candles in strategic places, and a reed diffuser in each room will go a long way to making your home smell wonderful. There is a variety of scents and you can match the scents to the rooms. Lampe Bergere is a great way to scent the home too, and as an added benefit they sanitize the air!
I hope these simple ways will encourage you to add that extra little touch to make your home the best smelling house on the block. I used to use a lot of potpourri in my home in baskets and bowls, that I would freshen with the aromatic oils. I sent a gift one time to a friend, and they swore they could smell “Nancy’s house” in the packing papers I used.
