Next To Normal Review

Performance took place at the visually pleasing and very comfortable Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts at 145 Queen St. West in Toronto.

Curious what people give a standing ovation for today.  This musical is generating rave reviews.
The music was fabulouse the stage setting was three stories and very visually intersting, extremely well done. The players brought lots of energy to their performance.  However, the story line was a real drag.  It was about a woman’s midlife depression over the death of her son 18 years earlier, which somehow has dragged on the full length of her marriage.  Everyone is hanging on in some manner or another and it goes on and on.

I truly appreciated the quality that was brought to this production. However there were four of us in attendance together, myself and 3 clients. We all left scratching our heads at what all the folks around us found so compelling. I left with a headache and one of my clients left depressed.
I must admit I went for groceries right after and found a patio for some glasses of wine.  Necessary for headache removal.

I wouldn’t ever think to write such a depressing dragged out story personally.  So it makes me wonder about our standards these days and what we value.
