Today I decided to tackle the dreaded task of staining the exterior of my house. The exterior of my house is wood, so I had to pickup some wood stain of the same colour. Before you purchase any stain, be sure it will work on whatever material your house is made from.
Before I began anything, I had to gather all the needed materials. I had plenty of stain, multiple paint brushes, and of course a ladder to reach the highest spots of the house.
Depending on the material of your exterior you may be able to use a roller (which is much faster than a brush), but in my situation I had to use a brush to get into each little groove and ensure I didn’t miss any spots because that just wouldn’t look good.
Before I began staining, I made sure to give the entire exterior a quick wash to remove any dirt and spider webs that may have built up over the years.
Once I was finally ready to begin, I started at the top going across the entire side, and slowly made my way to the bottom ensuring that every piece of wood was absorbing the stain.
It took me a total of 10 hours to complete my somewhat small house. Staining can be a painfully slow task, but its worth it to make sure your house not only looks good, but to also preserve the wood and extend its lifespan. Take a look at the before and after picture below to see my results.
Notice the grooves in the wood, that’s why I couldn’t use a roller. Also notice how the wood in before picture looks extremely faded and unpleasant to look at.
