The Cosmonaut’s Last Message

The full title is “The Cosmonaut’s Last Message To The Woman He Once Loved In The Former Soviet Union” but that is a bit unweildy to say the least.

The show was equally unwieldy.  This is a play written by David Greig and directed by Jennifer Tarver  on the Canadian Stage at the St Lawrence Centre on Front St. here in Toronto.

The set was simple but effective.  You always knew where you were supposed to be.

The dialogue was another thing.  The Russian cosmanaut’s had American Accents, the Irish had authentic Irish accents.  The Russian girl had a broken English/Russian accents.  The lack of appropriate accents in the right places left you wondering where you really were.

It seems today that the use of the F Word in plays is a major feature.  This play specialized in that use.  It was very off putting.

This play was supposed to be all about communication.  However I found there was very little real communication in it.

Unfortunately I yawned my way through this one…. I am unable to understand how the Globe and Mail gave this a 3.5 star out of 4.

It got me out of the houe that night.

Tell me what you thought of this play.
