Hidden amongst Toronto’s dozens of theatres the Walmer Center inside of the Walmer Rd. Baptist Church is a very small theatre comitted to giving new, young, budding artists an opportunity to get experience performing.
This organization is run by Sonus Stage Productions www.sonusstagepoductions.ca. Their specific mandate is to provide work for Canadian artists in contemporary and musical theatre, mentorship programs for new artists and educational opportunities for youth. They do this in part by providing opportunities for newbies to work alongside outstanding, established Canadian professionals.
The evening we attended was to watch a Sondheim Review. There were two male and two female songsters along with two piano players. The audience was spartan as tends to happen with these small local events. We gave them a standing ovation. Their efforts were worthy of a Broadway Production and they certainly gave it their all. The stage setting and backdrop were also very well done for such a small time effort.
Songsters of note were Tammy Everett, Mikaela MacGillivray,Joh McNeill and Brandyn McKinson. Watch out for these 4 young folks all quite equal in calibre.
