We viewed Zadies Shoes at the Factory Theatre on Bathurst St. in Toronto last Wednesday evening. The show is playing until June 5th.
Lots of good humor here however it did come from one direction. The rather wonderful Jewish rabai as played by Harry Nelken.
Harry plays the character of Eli, a rabai that also bets on the horses. Eli made the show. Without this characters great sense of humor the play was characterized by anger and angst.
You felt as though you were being yelled at all the time and the use of the F word again was a major feature here. Strange why bad language has become a predominant factor in many plays today.
I enjoyed this show. Some folks I overheard talking on the weekend in a cafe absolutely loved it. However, the man sitting next to us at the play couldn’t crack a smile. So this one is drawing a number of different opinions.
I give this one a 3 stars out of 4. What did you think.
