The Origins and Development of the Sunnylea Neighbourhood

This neighbourhood began it’s development when Alexander Thompson (a former King’s Ranger), purchased 200 acres of land. This was in the Sunnylea area, year 1803.

Mr. Thompson lived in a very distinguished building, which was known as the “Rose Bank Cottage”. Today his home no longer exists, however his son Archibald built a farmhouse just south of his fathers residence, and it is still standing in Sunnlea today! Archibald’s farmhouse is now known as the “Spring Bank Cottage”.

The Sunnlea neighbourhood is a very prosperous community, and it’s particularly popular with younger families and children. In the late 1800’s, families would come from all over the world to live in Sunnlea. They cultivated and filled the markets with baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables. This theme still exists in Sunnylea, you can see farmhouses along Prince Edward Drive, as well as Islington Avenue.

The farmhouses were subdivided, and houses were developed from 1930 until 1960. These detached Tudor-style homes come in a variety of sizes. Bungalows, split-level, storey-and- a-half, and two-storey homes can be found throughout the Sunnlea neighbourhood. They feature: riverstone exteriors, bay windows, stone chimneys, wrought iron railings, decorative front porches, and most offer wide frontage, as well as private parking.
